What a power bank is

A power bank is an external battery that stores energy and passes it to your phone over a cable. In practice it's a socket in your pocket: you can charge in a queue, on the bus, in a meeting or while shopping.

How much capacity you actually need

Capacity is measured in mAh. An average smartphone battery is 3,000–5,000 mAh, so:

5,000 mAh — roughly one full charge, enough for a normal city day.
10,000 mAh — two full charges, good for a long day, a trip or a flight.
20,000 mAh — three or more charges, but heavier and pricier.

Real-world capacity is about 25% lower than the number on the box because of voltage conversion losses.

Rent or buy?

A power bank you own works great — until it stays home or is itself empty at the critical moment. That is exactly what usually happens: people forget to recharge it and it becomes dead weight in the bag.

Rental solves it differently: you take a charged power bank from a station when you need one and return it when you're done.
